Social media is a phenomenon for marketing, there’s no if, ands or buts about it. One of the powerful things is brands can now build buzz like never before for a campaign or marketing initiative.

A potential blockbuster film for 2014, Godzilla, is currently garnering buzz at Comic-Con in San Diego for its digital marketing. Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. are taking a viral approach to promoting the movie.

Fake articles hinting at the film’s titular and iconic character have been popping up all over social networks.

This digital marketing strategy goes far beyond just the movie industry. It’s about creating buzz long before you go to market. Ultimately, you want to get people talking and anticipating.

Social media is the perfect medium to begin executing early marketing tactics. It is cost-effective and has a deep, broad reach. It is the best way to start letting your audience know that something is coming.

So what’s the key lesson for brands looking at the “Godzilla” campaign start examining? Look at the marketing campaigns you have on the horizon in the next 10-12 months. From there, build pre-launch creative into your strategy certain tactics that are geared towards the higher hanging fruit.
