Avril Lavigne and Chad Kroeger engaged. What’s Twitter saying?



If you haven’t heard, pop princess and sk8ter boi fan Avirl Lavigne and Chad Kroeger of Nickelback are engaged. The musicians were collaborating and dating and Kroeger proposed after six months. This has caused some buzz on Twitter as Canadians went, “What? Seriously?” and then started the inevitable CanCon/Complicated/Nickelback jokes.

We ran a very targeted search to see exactly what Canadians have been saying on Twitter for the last 24 hours, filtered for language because there was a lot of swearing. First, our Buzz Graph:

The usual words are there: “rocker” and “engaged” as well as mentions of Lavigne’s ex-husband, Deryck Whibley, lead signer of another Canadian band, Sum 41.

In the last 24 hours, there have been 6,997 mentions of the engagement, most of it happening on Twitter with 6,825 tweets. Speaking of tweets, let’s take a look at what’s been said:

Looking at the most authoritative tweets (after eliminating the news services) we can see that the jokes were still coming:

 When we removed the Canadian filter, we found that the tweets from the rest of the world were along the same theme:

 The proposed portmanteau is “Chavril” by the way.

This search was conducted via  Syosomos MAP. The search focused on Canada, English tweets, original content and the timeline between  August 21 and 22, 2012.
